The Decision

Have you ever had that feeling that something ain’t right? You know, that nagging feeling that tugs at your heart and says, “Pull away from this” or “Get away from that”. I’m sure you’ve experienced that before. In fact, I think that we all have at one time or another, but have you ever had that feeling about life in general?

Have you ever felt like “What is this all amounting to”? Or “I need to pull away from this type of life that I’m living.” It kind of feels like the things that currently have first place in your life barely deserve a ranking in your top ten. Have you ever been hanging out with your friends and heard in your heart, “Pull away from this”? Have you ever been watching TV and then all of a sudden a whisper saying, “Get away from that” echoes through your thoughts? It’s almost like you know you could be doing better things with your life. More accurately, it is like you know you were born to do better than what your current surroundings and activities reflect. To put it bluntly, “Something ain’t right!”

I think a lot of people feel that way nowadays. Our society is immersed in empty activities that amount to very little. For example, just recently much of America had their attention turned to Lebron James’ big “Decision”, but his decision had very little impact on our personal lives. I’m sure that for 99.9% of us, finding out who was going to cut Lebron James’s next million dollar check didn’t add one bit to our personal development or net worth. Quite frankly, if your life is anything like mine, then you certainly had bigger fish to fry.

As a matter of fact, I think that if we take the time to think about it, we almost always have bigger and better things to do with our time. Yet, if your life is anything like mine, way too often you find yourself wasting valuable time doing things, being places, and talking about stuff that does not matter.

Let me tell you a secret. Cable TV; doesn’t matter. Designer clothes; doesn’t matter. The latest albums; doesn’t matter. New movies; doesn’t matter. Hot clubs; doesn’t matter. More girlfriends; doesn’t matter. More boyfriends; doesn’t matter. Football season; doesn’t matter. Basketball season; doesn’t matter. Days at the mall; doesn’t matter. Getting high again; doesn’t matter. What they are wearing! What they are driving! Who they are with; none of it even matters. After a while it all becomes mundane and as monotonous as reading this long list of meaningless fillers that are being penned unto the valuable pages of your life’s story.

Many of the things that occupy our time only distract us from the outstretched arm of God Almighty that tries to lead us to a life that does matter. A life that matters to our family, matters to our friends, and matters to the world around us. We are supposed to have a life that proclaims “(put your name in this blank) was here!”

The Message Bible paraphrases 1 John 2:15-17 this way, “Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.”

You see, why are we wasting so much of our time involved with things that won’t last? It is all going to fade away. Though history may record Lebron James and his “Decision”, it is almost certain it will make no mention of the people that sat and observed. That is not to say that occasional entertainment and self-indulgence is intolerable. The problem is we have become people that are rarely active in meaningful pursuits, however, we are forever occupied with trivia ones.

Here’s is the deal, Lebron made his decision, but when will you make yours. When will you decide to step away from the played-out rerun that your life has become, and dive into a life of fresh experiences, production, growth, and meaning, which God has to offer you today?
